Steps to fix Invalid Boot.ini or HAL.DLL

If you are getting any one these error messages upon starting Windows XP/2K--

Invalid Boot.ini or Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: Windows\System32\Hal.dll
  1. This problem can be corrected booting the the Windows XP CD.
  2. Going into Recovery Console and typing BOOTCFG /REBUILD .
  3. Then press Y at the first prompt.
  4. At the Enter Load Identifer prompt type in Windows XP Home or Pro depending on which you have.
  5. Then at the Enter OS Load Options type /FASTDETECT
